Celebrate Local Record Shops with These Six Picks

Today a Winnipeg music mainstay celebrates a landmark. Despite the odds and the rapidly changing business landscape, local record shop Into the Music has stood the test of time and is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary today. To celebrate they’re offering sales, contest and giveaways all week.

I spent a lot of time at Into the Music when it was on Osborne. I didn’t even know that it started out on Corydon back in the 80s. There was a great article in the paper today that goes into more detail if you’re interested.

There is something oddly comforting about spending some time digging through the stacks. The excitement of finding a gem. The beauty of sharing something you’ve discovered and love.

So if you haven’t been to a local record store lately, here are a couple to check out:

Winnipeg Record and Tape Co. 1079 Wellington Ave.

Sound Exchange 557 Portage Ave.

Argy’s Records & Entertainment Shop aka Argy’s Collectibles 1604 St. Mary’s Rd

Blaine’s Records (and Books) 1795 Henderson Hwy (in the McIvor Mall – pretty much the only reason to go there)

Planet of Sound 1109 Henderson Hwy.

So, did I miss your favourite? If so I wanna know about it. Or let me know about a killer find. Drop me a line.

Or if you’re feeling like you’d like a bit more nostalgia check out this trailer for a locally produced film about the shops that were part of your musical education. I blogged about it a while back too. You can find it on demand on MTS’ Stories From Home. It’s also showing at the Gimli Film Festival on July 29th at 3pm.
