Today, April 22nd is Record Store Day. And not just any Record Store Day, but the 10th anniversary! It’s a great day for music lovers everywhere with special releases, in-store appearances and live performances.
If you’re not familiar, Record Store Day “was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally”.
On the first Record Store Day, on April 19, 2008, Metallica spent hours at Rasputin Music in San Francisco meeting their fans and now each year hundreds of artists, internationally famous and from the block, flock to record stores around the world for performances, signings, meet and greets and to fill their own shopping bags with music.
If you want to celebrate in Winnipeg there are six independently owned records stores participating: Argy’s Collectibles (St. Vital), Blaine’s (North Kildonan), Into The Music (Exchange District), Music Trader (Osborne Village), Planet of Sound (North Kildonan) and The Winnipeg Record and Tape Co. (West End).
As my favourite band once sang “When I got the music, I got a place to go“.
